Enhancing Happiness

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

I will share with you now that the single most gratifying thing for me is facilitating another's  enhancing happiness and that according to research, this makes me a happier person!

 coloroutsidethelinesbydawn.jpg

It takes commitment and effort to become happier, as with any goal in life. Research shows that when people are happier, they become healthier and more curious, sociable, helpful, creative, and willing to try new things.

The first step to enhancing happiness may be to challenge your own ideas about happiness. The truth may set you free for a happier life starting right now!  Please read on about a few myths about happiness that may be holding you back.

 It's all about genetics

There's evidence that genetics contributes to about 50% of your happiness. There are some proven methods for enhancing happiness-  such as nurturing relationships, writing in a gratitude journal, committing random acts of kindness, (helping others --  may be the most direct route to happiness, notes Stephen G. Post, PhD, co-author of Why Good Things Happen to Good People: The Exciting New Research That Proves the Link Between Doing Good and Living a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life).  Beginning a program of morning meditation or exercise can help too.

Changes like these -- proven methods for enhancing happiness -- can become habits after a while, which means they eventually take less effort.

Happiness is dependant on your circumstances

Robert Biswas-Diener, MS, founder of Meridian Life Coaching LLC and co-author ofHappiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth and Sonja Lyubormirsky, PhD, author of The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want and professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside agree that lasting happiness has more to do with how you think and behave than with life's circumstances.   Helping others with face to face interaction, including volunteering a few hours a week or doing five generous things in a week can significantly enhance your level of happiness.  It's important that you choose activities that have a good personal fit.

Positive emotions must be more abundant than negative emotions for someone to experience happiness

Research has shown this is not true, except perhaps for people with depression or other serious disorders.

I hope this information has helped to de-mystify happiness and inspired you to act on something  to enhance your happiness that is both pleasureable and meaningful!

EFT is like yoga for the emotions!

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

EFT is always blowing my mind. 'Cause it always works!!
I was skeptical before I learned it- and am amazed at how powerfully effective it is with each personal or client application to release negative energy and create new positive emotions that result in action around issues that have been "stuck".  I can do "surrogate tapping" with  you on the phone - or without you at all- like "long distance Reiki", etc.  Just ask :)  EFT is like yoga for the emotions!  It involves you gently tapping on stress relief points of the body while I implement powerful language.  It provides relief from physical and emotional pain, and any trauma or beliefs that have been blocking your truth.  Do you feel the weight of all the 'shoulds' on your shoulders? Do you sometimes wish, 'If only I could be who I really am?' If you would like to access your own guidance and wisdom instead of seeking truth about yourself from other people or sources, you can learn to use Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to help dissolve whatever is in the way.

When you are ready for action and a circumstance occurs so that you experience confusion or fear what do you do? Freeze..nothing probably, that's human nature.  Even though it may be the polarity of what you want to do when you are ready for action, this is prime time to take stock and do inner work in order to move past blocks and make fabulous, free feeling progress.

Writer's block, for instance, is often a matter of too much distraction.  Perhaps it's about needing fresh ideas, or being "sure of yourself", confident that what you write will resonate with your readers.  Procrastination is always fear based.  Before you can move forward, it's important to know which kind(s) of fear you're facing- that's the intitial inner work- is it fear of failure, being judged, fear of success (yes, success can take you to new scary places..) or of being controlled.

Once you've gotten the "fear factor" figured out, sometimes with assistance of a coach, then it's time to have a few guided EFT sessions.  My facilitation of The EFT Technique has been 100% effective in my four years as an EFT-
ADV practitioner combining the EFT Technique with Peak Performance Success Coaching.  This includes conquering fear of public speaking, which is the number one fear in our society. phobias and procrastination.  Immediately following an EFT session using Gary Craig's short EFT Technique form, I facilitate  a deep guided relaxation-visualization session to reinforce the tapping, intuitive coach-like language and positive emotional transitions that have occurred.

EFT HAS ACHIEVED AN "EVIDENCE BASED" STATUS, BUT IS YET TO BE APPROVED BY THE APA

What I learned from colleagues is that while the APA does recognize that EFT is evidence based (after their review of 50 research studies)they are still looking at it before rendering any definitive decision on whether they will actually accept it.  In the meanwhile, they do not give credit to any psychologists who seek continuing education credits for taking courses in it.  I actually believe this is a good thing for now, since they might otherwise try to regulate it and retain it just for psychologists, when it was intended to be a lay technique used by everyone.

 YAY!!!

Six Tips to Help Overcome Overwhelm and Be Fearless!

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

Do you feel overwhelmed?

That's another way of saying the "s" word that someone brought to my attention yesterday makes people feel even worse when they see it in print...

OK- overwhelmed it is! When we feel overwhelmed, we feel "out of control" and often have physical symptoms that are unpleasant or hidden and dangerous.  So..how can we overcome overwhelm, accelerate resilience and be fearless?  Here are a few suggestions:

1.  Change your mindset-reframe, that is think of possibilities from different perspectives that may be less "worrisome".

2.  Set aside self-blame and turn it into gratitude for what you have and have accomplished.

3.  Surround yourself with positive people.  That is not always possible, so learn how to "shield" yourself from emotionally or verbally abusive people and acknowledge what they are doing-saying is from their perspective and is not necessarily the truth or "right".

4.  Take a few minutes each day to reflect on your feelings.

5.  Set specific goals that are realistic and attainable.

6. Practice relaxation techniques on a regular basis.

Late Bloomer-Boomer?

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach
A gentleman I know from business networking said very definitively (he's an attorney), "I think you are a late bloomer- you are  really good at what you do and so passionate about your work."  I smiled.  I said, "You know me now and yes I'm  a "late bloomer-boomer"  in my current work as  coach-educator in stress/anger management and related topics, and I no longer am actively doing what I was as passionate about before we met- that is "Moving Meditation Fitness(R)" and wellness coaching, including stress reduction.  I invited my attorney friend (who is extremely successful and stressed) to download my recording of rhythmic movement and guided relaxation on my website:

Alleviate Your Stress with EFT and Peak Performance Success Coaching

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

As a normal part of life, stress enables us to get things done. If left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological, and even physical problems. Stress causes a disruption in the flow of vital energy through the body. These energetic imbalances can throw off the immune system or cause symptoms of pain, sleep disturbances, abnormal digestion, headaches, menstrual irregularities, aggravation of already troublesome health conditions and, over time, more serious illnesses can develop.

Stress is cumulative.  Stressful situations that last over a long period of time can create an ongoing low-level stress that puts continual pressure on the nervous system, increasing activity, and can cause the overproduction of hormones. The extra stress hormones over an extended period of time may wear out the body's reserves, lead to fatigue, depression, a weakened immune system, and a host of serious physical and psychological ailments.

Some signs of stress overload include:

- anxiety or panic attacks
- feelings of constant pressure, hassled and hurried
- irritability and moodiness
- physical symptoms such as stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pain
- allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma
- problems sleeping
- overindulgence in food, alcohol, smoking, or drugs
- sadness or depression

Stress is often the cause of illness and the deterioration of health. Finding a release valve for your stress can help you stay healthy. According to research, stress, frustration, and unresolved anger can play an important part in throwing the immune system off and allowing pathogens to affect the body.

Research has shown that EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), meditation and relaxation techniques can reduce stress levels. My private sessions and workshops/trainings integrate these modalities with Peak Performance Success Coaching for your life and career: www.balanceandpower.com

While it isn't always possible to remove the external forces causing stress, the ability to effectively deal with stress is a choice. Take time for yourself to cultivate the energy you need to handle your stress more skillfully and effectively.

If you or someone you know is experiencing stress or a stress related disorder, contact me for more information about how the modalities mentioned in the previous paragraph can help you regain peace of mind and stay healthy.  Schedule an appointment today!  516 623 4353   balanceandpower

Transition From Hassled to Mellow in 6 Easy Steps

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

I've asked around; everyone knows the definition of hassled and mellow. However, not many are able to transition from hassled to mellow in a short time and without doing damage- emotionally and/or physically.  An example of a smaller issue someone can stress over is finding kitchen cabinets open all the time.

You may say- that's nothing- just close them..OK, but when that small stressor accumulates emotionally, stuff can happen- both in your body and confrontationally with the "culprit".

Here's a bigger example that we all can relate to- stuck in traffic-late to begin with-and worst case- cell is not in the car with you (perhaps on kitchen table or in another bag?).  And how about not saving something on the computer and its suddenly disappears after spending almost an hour writing.

Sometimes the impatience-frustration-anger is directed inward and sometimes at others.  No matter to our adrenalin, cortisol and muscle tension levels, which are now way up and needing to be released.  Easier said than done..

Here are 5 easy way to transition from hassled to mellow- just give yourself and others a chance!:

  • Relaxation Breathing at least 3 times with exra release: Breathe deeply in through your nose and out mouth, strong and longer exhale than inhale.
  • Leave when possible and try stronger physical releases: **silent scream, progressive muscle relaxation**, walk, exercise.
  • Do something fun- or at least differently with a smile/forced positive outlook.
  • Listen to music of the genre you want to feel like.
  • Communicate when others as necessary from the "I" place without blame or judgement.
  • Learn EFT and use it on the spot when possible and frequently there after until the issue no longer upsets you.

How to Stop Self-Sabotage

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

Many   competent people "self-sabotage" themselves every day by overreacting emotionally and hurting their relationships — both at work and at home-- and by staying stuck in habits that hurt them, such as procrastination, overeating, disorganization, avoiding conflict ... the list goes on and on.

Many professionals, on the other hand, manage well, because they have figured out how to stop self-sabotage or have never done that in the first place.  They respond with a level head — even if  ready to "blow a fuse" and usually can

  • Adapt to workplace changes — even those that are tough to swallow
  • Stick with difficult challenges when solutions don't come easily
  • Follow through on plans ... turn "good intentions" into reality ... and meet more goals
  • Develop the steady self-control it takes to stand up for yourself and deal with conflicts positively
  • Break on-the-job habits that hurt you, like procrastination, disorganization, and others

You can bring more discipline into your personal and professional life by creating healthier routines and relationships.  Maybe you are stuck - and either don't have "a clue" or have many "clues" and don't know what to do.

Here are a few ways to create a better emotional relationship with yourself- and that will surely transfer to others- just give these a try:)!:

  • Write down three things - people - situations you are grateful for each day
  • Write personal affirmations and place them on your dashboard , on computer and in the bathroom
  • Practice effective communication- be assertive v. reactive
  • Leave the scene, when possible if you find your stress/frustration/anger quotient rising and take a "time-out" to do any of the above! and/or punch the ceiling, go into the car and scream, do EFT (emotional freedom techniques, tapping)
  • Practice relaxation and/or meditation on a regular basis
  • Exercise often
  • Enjoy nature
  • Have fun! and Smile :)
  • Eat and sleep well

All the best with this- it takes determination, perseverance & internal motivation to succeed at anything.  Trust that these techniques help and practice them~ and then write your own success story!  I'm listening...
