Do you listen to your gut?

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert
Do you know the real meaning behind the saying "listen to your gut"?  This saying can mean a lot of things but what it intentionally is saying to you is that your digestive system and all the organs that make up the digestive system; the colon, the intestines, the liver, the kidneys etc (the gut) determines how healthy you really are.

Digestion can take up nearly 70% of the body's energy, however when you are on a mostly raw and living foods diet that energy is being extracted from the enzymes that are still intact in the food as opposed to taking that energy from the body.  Even though our body has a reserve of enzymes in the pancrease, those enzymes deplete themselves with age, toxicity, and stress factors.

Detoxing and cleansing the body are essential tools for your health, the quality of your life, and your longetivity.  How well you digest your food, how many times you eliminate, how toxic your digestive organs are all major factors in the status of your health.  Constipation is said to be the only real disease that exists out here.  In Chinese medicine, constipation is loosely translated as stagnant or blocked energy, so implementing detoxing and cleansing into your own personal healthcare plan is extremely essential to one's health and quality of life.

Cooked vs. Raw

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert
Most of our food is better for us nutritionally when it is left as it in its natural state.  Many people ask me what percentage cooked vs. raw is good for the body.

It all varies according to a person's desires, lifestyle, budget, and committment to their health.  Eating a mostly raw foods diet does not have to be expensive, but it can but that is only because of the influx of commercialzed labeled raw food products that provide a high nutrient density to the body, but they can take your whole check as well.  Products like nut butters,  kelp noodles, packaged dried fruits and other items, you can actually make for yourself at home if you have the time.

Plain and simple, cooking foods will reduce the effectiveness of the benefits of micronutrients especially vitamins like vitamin A, B, C, D, and E.

However cooking for some food does have its benefits as cooking some food
will actually release the nutrient instead of destroying it.

For example, a white potato tastes much better cooked than raw.   And no matter how it is cooked, it will retain its vitamin B and C content.

However boiling, sauteeing, baking, steaming will reduce the antioxidant content in spinach and broccoli.

Cooking involves fire and when you put fire to anything, it destoys the matter at hand.

Overall keep your cooking to a minimum.  Raw foods are easier to prepare, safer because it doesn't involve fire or heat, and they taste better too in their natural state.

The Super in Superfoods Leads to Increased Energy, Weight Loss & Balance

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert

Superfoods are those multi-tasking, multi-purpose foods that give you more punch in your bite than other foods.  There are many different categories of superfoods that you can choose from based on your budget, lifestyle, palette, and nutritional needs.  There is a reason why we call these foods superfoods.

Superfoods.jpg

Beside your basic vitamins and minerals that foods contain like vitamin A, B, C, and traces of iron and protein, superfoods contain iodine, antioxidants, chlorophll, and other hard to get elements in the body that do not come frommost foods.

Our green superfoods are those dark leafy greens like kale, collards, spinach, and wheatgrass along with wild algae, cholorella, and spirulina
which were the first forms of food known to humankind on this planet.  Spirulina is a cultivated algae that has a 70% complete protein profile.

Wheatgrass may be hard to get down the throat because of its strong and robust grassy flavor, but wheatgrass is gluten-free, super alkalizing for the blood and helps people who want to lose weight because it stimulates the thyroid gland and your body’s metabolism.

In our fruit, nut, and seed category we have coconuts which is one of those cure-all foods, the noni fruit, goji berries, acai berries, Brazil’s gift to the American food system via Oprah and Dr. Oz, and maca root, a sexual energizer and natural libido booster.

Then there is the infamous cacao where real natural chocolate comes from that world-renowned raw foods expert David Wolf put on the map for the world to enjoy.  Coconuts is one of those superfoods that the human body recognizes immediately because it resembles the molecular structure of human blood plasma.  During World War II, soldiers drink coconut water to help heal wounds and to stop bleeding from gun wounds.

Cacao contains a high amount of magnesium, a mineral that is severely deficient in the Standard American Diet (SAD).
Magnesium is one of those elements that nourishes our nervous system. And only 28 grams of a serving of cacao will give your body 3 times the amounts it needs for daily iron intake for both men and women.  Cacao also has more antioxidants than green tea and red wine alone.

Other fruit, nut, and seed categories that contain easily digestible complete proteins are hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds.

Our herb superfood that is a household name is ginseng.  Ginseng is one of those herbs that you can drink in tea form and/or consume in capsules.   It is also a sexual energizing tonic and a restorative herb that helps people to recover from stress-related diseases.

Aloe vera has wonderful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to it and its also wonderful for the digestion system along with being a great source for healthy hair and skin.

Then there is the plant life on the bottom of the ocean which is my favorite.  Why?  Because these different types of seaweed like kombu, nori, arame, and wakame, are full of natural iodine that feeds your body’s thyroid gland which is the second most important gland in your body behind your master gland: The Pineal Gland.

The thyroid gland regulates your mood, appetite, hormones, and your metabolism.  If it is imbalanced it can affect everything from your hair, skin, and nails, to women’s ability to ovulate.

Not only do the seaweeds contain natural iodine in them, but they have the molecular structure of human blood plasma as well and they are full of all the nutrients that come out of the ocean.

There is a plethora of other superfoods to consider when shopping at Weaver’s Way but choose the superfoods that fit your budget, your palette, and your nutritional needs.

7 Tips on Transforming Your Eating Habits and Watch Your Body Go From Blah to Wa La

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert

Changing eating habits means you have to have a different perception around food that what you had before.  First of all food, and I mean real food is what comes out of the ground, off a vine, or out of the ocean in the form of seaweed.  Food is substance.  Anything opposite of that is junk.  Changing eating habits takes work, time, practice, and diligence.  Its difficult to stop eating what you are used to eating out of comfort, boredom, or just ignorance, so here are some tips that will help you to make that transition.

eatinghabits.jpg

1.  If you have given up something in your diet, whether it is sugar, refined grains, or fatty foods, replace it with something healthy. If you have given up white sugar, embrace Mother Nature’s natural sweeteners that she has blessed us with in abundance of. We have agave nectar, maple syrup, honey, stevia, lucuma powder, yacon syrup, etc. Depending on your taste buds, health needs, budget, etc, you have a lot of different sweeteners to choose from.

2Eat more greens. Make it a habit to eat something green everyday or drink something green everyday. Green symbolizes life and healing. You can’t go wrong getting your body more alkaline with greens whether its a green salad, juice, powder, or fruit. Dark leafy greens are essential and they come in kale, collard green, beet greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, etc. Mix them all together to create a rich and appetizing salad or put them through a juicer and add an apple or fresh ginger root to sweeten it a bit.

3. Eat more frequently. Many of us eat 1-3 meals a day and we stuff everything in our mouths at once. Make it a point to eat more frequently but in lesser quantities throughout the day. This balances out your appetite as its harder to get hungry.  It also cuts down on combining the wrong foods, and when you do sit down to eat that family meal together, you are more pleasant, upbeat, and fairly nourished because you’ve been eating all day as opposed to starving yourself throughout the day.

4. Eat foods that you normally would not eat, yet that are good for you. This year I’m branching out and I’m going to dive into more superfoods throughout the year, and more exotic tropical fruits this summer. Usually I stick to very traditional fruits during the summertime which is actually the time that I consume more fruits than vegetables but I’m going to eat more tropical fruits when they are available.

5. Learn how to veganize a meal. I loved how one of my Facebook friends let me know that instead of having a traditional gumbo for the New Year, he decided to make a vegetarian mock version of it. So learn how to make vegetarian, vegan, or raw versions of your favorite meals.

6. Sit down and eat your food. Chew it slowly and take your time. Proper digestion and vibrant and optimal health starts in the colon and with our digestion system. The best way for us to get all the nutrients from the food is to chew it properly and thus promote better digestion.

7. Simplify your eating habits. We are so obsessed with protein and starches that we are programmed to think we are supposed to eat them at every meal. There is nothing wrong with having only a salad for dinner and there is nothing wrong with only having a bowl of berries for breakfast. Give up the idea that your plate should look a certain way. Rely on how you feel after a meal as opposed to what you have been told. Obviously with all the disease and sickness and the failed health care system, something or someone hasn’t always been telling us the truth.

What's so wrong with eating soy?

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert
95% of the world's soy is a genetically modified product.
Many of the meat substitute products that vegetarians
consume these days comes from the soybean product.
Tofu, tempeh, the veggie burgers, the veggie sausages, etc
are all made from the soybean product.  Many vegetarians
gravitate towards these products because of the meat-like
texture and taste and in our transition from a meat-based
diet to a plant-based diet, we have found that these foods
assist with that transition, however although you might be
eating healthier, you are not necessarily eating a healthy and
balanced diet.

The soybean in its original natural state is a healthy food
in moderation as most beans and legumes are a bit harder
to digest in the body.  However most of the soy products
including soy milk that we are consuming is not made from
soybeans in its original form.

Eating large amounts of soy is known for reducing fertility
in women because of the plant compounds in the product that
mimic estrogen.  It is also known for triggering early puberty
in children, and disrupting the development of fetuses and children.
Most of the infant formula that is made in the U.S. is made from
soy.

Remember soy is a genetically engineered food product that is not
in its natural state.  So be easy on the soy products.

The diet of our ancestors is the best way to eat.  Consuming
vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains, and superfoods
that are organic, in season, and locally grown are the best types
of food for healing and living.

Revealed The Rainbow Diet How does it Make You Smarter?

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert
The Rainbow Diet embraces different types of food when it comes to the color of food and how it benefits the body.  Color has vibration and the vibration of food has specific functions and benefits for the body's different systems.
Rainbowsalad.jpg
Eating lots of green food promotes healing for the body because green is the color for life, love, and healing.  The heart chakra of the body actually emits a green color, not a red color like most of us believe.  And plants get the color green from chlorophyll which I coin as "the melanin for plants".  Foods like kale, collards, spinach, brocolli, bok choy, lettuce, cucumbers are green foods that promote healing.

Eating red foods creates internal heat and fire in the body to stimulate digestion and remove toxins.  Foods like cranberries flushes out our urinary tract, raspberries, red bell peppers, and goji berries are red foods that stimulate our digestive juices.

Yellow and orange foods like oranges, orange and yellow bell peppers, lemons, mangoes, papaya, promote fertility among women and men.

And blue and purple foods like purple cabbage, blueberries, and blackberries boost brain function and memory.

Five Simple Ways to Treat Yourself Well

By Allison Moss-Women's Relationship & Empowerment Visionary

Treat U Well.jpg

As you go through your regular daily routine it can be hard to take a few moments to do something nice for yourself. Taking time to care for YOU is however, an important part of recognizing you deserve love, are worthy of goodness and will encourage others to treat you well in return.

Each simple thing that you do can have a very positive affect on your sense of self and your well being! Try out one or two of these this week and enjoy the happiness boost that you give to yourself!

1.) Cook "comfort food"- Comfort food doesn't have to be unhealty or packed with calories! When you're feeling the need for a bit of nurturing make something that your Mom or Grandmom used to fix! Chicken & dumplin's is one of my favorites! Mmmm....Make enough that you can indulge in more than one meal so that you won't have to cook again for a day! You'll love the way it makes you feel and it will give you a break in the kitchen for a bit!

2.) Indulge in aromatherapy- Scents trigger memories that can uplift your spirit in wonderful ways! Treat yourself to a reed diffuser, new candle or even a new body spray! Lavender is relaxing, ylang ylang induces feelings of romance and anything citrus boosts energy levels! Take a few minutes to sniff a variety of scents and pick out the one that suits your positive intentions! (*Shopping Hint- Wal-Mart has a amazing assortment of scents in their craft section! You can pick your glass bottle, your oil and your reeds to create a personalized diffuser for under $10! I have found the oil quality is fairly good and really does diffuse throughout a large room! My favorite, the Jasmine and White Gardenia oil. Oh yum!) If your budget is TIGHT put a few cinnamon sticks or cloves in a pot and simmer them slowly on the stove! You can do this with rosemary too!

3.) Use your local library for fun, Free treats for YOU!- Dive into a good book, relax with a movie or download a digital book copy for your ereader! I have been amazed recently by the resources available from my local library! Spend the day rushing off to an exotic location with an adventure story, catch up on your favorite TV shows through their DVD series copies or even find an audio book to listen to while pampering yourself in the tub! Whatever you choose you can't go wrong with free and fun entertainment for YOU time!

4.) Sleep in or go to bed early! How much sleep do you get each night? Most people only manage an average of only 5 hours. Indulge your mind, body and spirit in a rejuvenation day by allowing yourself a day to catch up on rest! You will find yourself energized and be refreshed in spirit as you take on the tasks of a new day!

5.) Unplug for a day! Even though it may not seem possible, the world can and will continute to function if you take a day off! All of the wonderful tools which keep us connected, cell phones, computers and more, do take a toll on our energy levels. The EMF's that are emitted from electronices can be draining! If you have been feeling unusually tired try unplugging for a few hours and focusing on something you have been longing to do! Paint a picture, go for a walk or even sit in a cafe' sipping something delicious! Your body and mind with thank you!

Be creative and schedule time to spend with you! As you recognize you are worthy of treating yourself well you raise your vibration! As you raise your vibration you attract things and people of a higher quality! Indulging yorself isn't a selfish act it is anecessary one! You deserve it!

Three Plant-based foods for Flawless, Clear, Young-Looking Skin

By Nwenna Kai - Eco-health and lifestyle expert
Our skin is our largest organ outside of the body and there are several natural ways to take care of it by preventing it from aging so quickly.

We all want flawless, clear, young-looking skin, so start to apply these three foods either internally or externally and get the skin you can feel good about being in.

Three foods that I recommend specifically for the skin can be applied internally and externally are the following:

Coconut Oil - All the beautiful know about coconut oil.  Coconut oil can be taken internally and/or applied externally.  I take one tablespoon a day for my good fat content.

Cucumbers - Take cucumbers and apples and either juice them with a juicer or you can blend them as well.  If you blend them together, the texture will be pulpy.  You can take straight cucumber but adding the apple gives it some sweetness.

Avocados - Because of the omegas and the oils in avocado, it internally moisterizes the skin.  Fresh sliced avocados can also be applied to the skin and underneath the eyes.

For more information about eating a plant-based diet, and living a plant-based lifestyle, vist my website @ www.nwennakai.com and sign up for my e-blasts, updates, and e-newsletter.
