How to Use the Zen Way of Life for Creating Peace in Your Business

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

The Zen Way of Life can be used for business with Mind Blowing Results.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins

with one small step"

(Chinese Proverb)

It’s the getting started – the first small step that often  seems insurmountable.  Getting  started  can be tough.   The good news is that when you do get started, things can roll along!  There may be a few bumps in the road on the way to your goal, and that’s why it’s important not to take that personally (be obective as possible), detached from outcome (in the Zen tradition) and stay positive.

If you find yourself on the couch, perhaps the first small step is rolling over onto the floor – and if you have a pet getting some love there… smiling, laughing and feeling gratitude about whomever and  whatever is happening well in your life.

It’s really important to be certain that a goal is something you really want- not just something that sounds good.  Take all aspects of a situation into consideration, this helps to prevent  self-sabotage.  Having a realistic goal with a realistic time frame is important within a bigger picture.  These are the “R” and “T” in SMART  Goals.

Specific  The goal should identify a specific action or event  that will take place.

Measurable  The goal and its benefits should be quantifiable.

Achievable  The goal should be attainable given available resources.

Realistic  The goal should require you to stretch some and point towards success.

Timely  The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished

Write your goal in positive language.  The more positive instructions you give yourself, the more positive results you get!

Here are a few more strategies for goal manifestation:

  •   Review and re-prioritize your goals frequently.
  •   Throughout the day ask yourself  “does this take me closer or      further from my goals(s)?”
  •  Give yourself permission to change your mind.
  •   Pay attention to your body, feelings, thoughts and intuitive self!

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) can help remove blocks, release frustrations and negative energy and set you into positive action.

Meditation Reduces Anxiety

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

Statistics show that meditation reduces anxiety and stress levels. The ancients knew this way before the research and books were written and the  modernized, "westernized" version of Zen meditation, also known as "Mindfulness Based Meditation" was created.  Many hatha yoga classes include this meditation style as do MBSR programs: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, designed and popularized by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the U. Mass Medical Center in 1979.  I have taken a training in MBSR at Omega Institute in New York facilitated by Kabat-Zinn circa the time of the publication of his book "Wherever You Go, There You Are" which is a wonderfully easy to read and interesting introduction to MBSR and meditation to reduce anxiety.

Now I will discuss a few points about meditation. The most important factors are to be motivated to meditate and to practice diligently when you’re not experiencing a high anxiety level.  Meditation means “focus”. It helps us do just that by clearing the mind of thoughts and images - to give it a rest and to make room for creative ideas and “aha” moments.

While you are trying to meditate, thoughts inevitably arise. It is advisable to simply “notice” them as you would notice passing clouds in the sky. Then, let them go and onto the next moment.   Meditation is about being in the moment (resting from constant mind chatter) in order to be refreshed and recharged when done with a session .

 Your focus can be on

• your breath   (the in breath and the out breath, breathing naturally after a few deep relaxation or belly breaths- in through the nose and out from the mouth; abdomen expanding before chest).

• a visual spot (not a whole scene)

• a sound

• counting with the breath

• a mantra (personal phrase or syllables such as “inhale love, exhale negativity”)

It’s easy! The challenge is in keeping still and sustaining being in the moment with whatever your focus may be.  You need only meditate for ten or twenty minutes once or twice day to notice a lowering of your anxiety level within several days or weeks; it varies individually.  For a "quick fix" to lower anxiety level or head off an anxiety attack, try the three relaxation breaths followed by a one minute meditation (detached from oncoming thoughts- get out of your way!).  Like other skills, the more you practice, the easier it is and the more you meditate the less anxiety is experienced.  Go for it!

4 Strategies for Emotional Flexibility

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach

It's tricky to know when to let go and  make confident choices to continue, restart or  toss.  Below are four strategies to attain and maintain emotional flexibility:

  • Non-attachment to outcome (Zen philosophy) is as important as getting started and doing our best on the path to reaching desired outcome-goals.
  • Practice detachment so that you will see when things aren't worth pursuing, when it's time to release and let go
  • EFT (read morehttp://www.balanceandpower.com/eft ) is an enormously helpful tool in mastering these often challenging processes.
  • Seek support and a brainstorming-venting soundboard to explore your choices-prioritizing-focus issues.  I offer a FREE twenty minutes phone consultation to create a customized coaching program with you.  My coaching is via phone-email or face-to-face one to one and small group sessions in Baldwin, Long Island, N.Y. and groups on your site.  eileen@balanceandpower.com   516 623 4353.

The Importance of Flexibility

By Eileen Lichtenstein - Peak-Performance-Success Coach
I’ve always been persistant and persevering and know these qualities have helped me follow through on projects and with  important relationships. However,  sometimes folks dont get that - or strongly disagree on issues in question (a dispute or arguement) - and call it being stubborn, inflexible, "not seeing the forest for the trees", obsessive...The tricky part is knowing when to let  go when things  really arent working out,  making the choice to continue, restart or  toss.  Non- attachment to outcome (Zen philosophy) is as important as getting started and doing our best,  so that we can be somewhat detached and be able to  see when things aren't worth pursuing, when it's time to release and let go.  That can be quite challenging!  EFT (read more: http://www.balanceandpower.com/eft.php) is  an enormously helpful  tool in this process.  If you need support, brainstorming-venting soundboard and exploration of your choices-prioritizing-focus issues  contact me for a FREE twenty minutes phone consultation  to find out about different coaching packages and a create a customized coaching program for you (via phone-email or face-to-face and small group sessions in Baldwin (Long Island) N.Y. ) Contact me: eileen@balanceandpower.com  516 623 4353.
