How to Get a Jumpstart on 2012!

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach
2011827142311123.jpg

Move into 2012 with good energy and focus...

Are you stressed about Christmas spending?  Do you feel pressure to spend over your limit?    That will rob you of your energy so you can't focus on the present and get excited about setting your goals for 2012.

My suggestion is that you enjoy the Christmas holidays but do everything in moderation.  What do I mean?  Set some boundaries around your spending. Buy what you can afford. Give from your heart.

The best way to plan for 2012 is to look back to your recent past, 2010.  So take a look back at 2010 and ask yourself the question:

One year ago around this time what was I doing? Where was I at?

Next, Where do I see myself in 2012?

Third, How will I achieve that goal?

Here are some other questions to ask yourself in order to flesh out your goals. Where do I want to live? What do I want to be doing to make money? How many hours do I want to work per day/per week? What income do I want to have?

An important key to having what you want is deciding what you want way ahead of time. Then visualize yourself experiencing what you want.

I encourage you to get out a sheet of paper and review where you were last year. In the process of doing this some guilt may come up for things you didn't get done. The key is to forgive yourself for what you didn't accomplish. It's now in the past and there's nothing you can do about it.  Don't hold it against yourself or carry it like a monkey on your back into 2012. It will only set you back.

Write down all the things you didn't get done and at the bottom of the page "I forgive myself." The next step is to tear it into shreds or burn it so you can free yourself from the mistakes and missteps of 2011. You will become lighter moving forward in 2012.

Last, write down what you desire for 2012 and visualize it. Include all the support you'll need to achieve your goals.  If you take the time to work on this during the next two weeks you will find yourself going forward into 2012 with ease and joy. You will have let go of the guilt and heaviness from your unaccomplished goals and you'll experience gratitude for your achievements  in 2011.  This will give you the momentum needed to jump into 2012!

And unlike many of your friends you will not be looking for help with your New Year's resolutions. We know it doesn't work for the vast majority of people so why go down that road again.

As Albert Einstein said: "Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly expecting a different result."

Get a jumpstart on 2012 by doing a review of 2011. Take a look back at 2010 and answer some questions about where you were, where you want to be and what help you'll need to achieve your goals. You can apply this to any area of your life.

Here's an audio link of a talk  I gave about the subject of goal setting and giving yourself a break.

Do this before January 1, 2012 and you'll be rocking! Good luck!

How Is Life?

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach
Life+is+beautiful+the+way+it+is....jpg

"The way life treats you is a merciless reflection of the way you treat yourself." -Anonymous

Have you ever asked someone the question how is life? What answer did they give? Did it seem to line up with what you know is going on in their life?

I recently asked a friend who I hadn't called for a while: "How is life?" Her response was: "Life is tough." And then she began to elaborate on how tough her life is. What do you think she experiences every day? That's right. That life is tough.

What is the meaning of life? Life has no meaning except the meaning you give to it. In other words life is neutral. So if you're experiencing a tough life the first thing to check is your attitude.

Perhaps you wake up some days feeling good about life and it's likely that if you stay with the good feelings you experience more positive things and at the end of that day you say I had  a good day.

But there are days when for one reason or another you may wake up late for work, you rush out but your car doesn't start, another driver shouts at you in traffic, you get to your appointment late and toward the end of that day you receive some bad news. By the end of that day you feel out of control. Stop!

To get yourself out of feeling bad, stop, relax and take a couple of deep breaths. Breathe aloud the sound of Aah. It will help to center you.
Next, observe where your focus is... Third, do some activity that will help you switch your focus. Go for a walk, do some yoga, meditate, watch some comedy, write a gratitude journal, hug somebody or a pet.

You need to develop a daily practice to help you "respond instead of react" to life.
Here's a morning routine. Before getting out of bed visualize what you want for your day.
Example, run through the different activities you have lined up and see them all going the way you want. Focus on what you want, not what you don't want.
Next write a gratitude list. Third, listen to some inspiring music, pray or meditate.

Eliminate bad news at the start of your day. If you must have your fix of it do it later in the day and balance it with listening to or reading some good news. Begin to reduce your intake of bad news. Set boundaries around taking phone calls before you center yourself with your morning routine.  Trust God/The Universe and Life to bring you good and not bring you harm.

If you practice this over a period of at least 90 days you will develop a habit. By then if someone asks you: "How is life?",  you're likely to respond: "Life is beautiful."

What are you doing for self-renewal this spring?

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach
It's beginning to feel a lot like spring in my city with temperatures in the mid 50s Fahrenheit. The birds are chirping and the snow is melting away... It's likely we'll still have more snow in the forecast over the next little while but there's a distinct energy in the air that comes with this season.

It is said that spring is the time of birth and renewal. I can definitely see that as I observe the trees begin to bud again. And I hear the birds calling. And of course the flowers will begin to bloom soon.

Many of us get into spring cleaning our homes at this time of the year. We clear away winter clothing and stuff to get ready for the new season. And so the question becomes what are you going to do for personal self-renewal this spring?

Many of us get stuck in a funk and we have no idea how to get out... Being stagnant is like dying. And the way out of that is to always seek to develop ourselves and get help with the things we can't seem to manage on our own. Life coaches and other personal development experts are great resources to support us in uncovering, recovering and discovering ourselves.

The journey of self-discovery is a life-long process. It's a wonderful and fun adventure too. As you consciously and deliberately take time for personal self-renewal this spring you will find yourself beginning to bud and bloom like the flowers and trees in nature. Your life will take on new meaning and you'll begin to experience living at a new level. Instead of surviving you'll observe yourself thriving. That's the benefit of self-renewal.

Are you in control of your life or is someone else?

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach
It's already Day Three of the Empowered Women Teleretreat series and how spectacular the past two days have been...  We've had the pleasure of learning from amazing experts on self-empowerment, business, image and health and wellness.
Day one opened with International Empowerment Speaker Catrice Jackson offering up a delectable serving of the Seven Laws of Delicious Living Success. What a treat!

According to Catrice, these are the guiding principles she's created to facilitate change. They include: take control of your life, dream big, master your mindset and quit living in fear and doubt.
One of my favourite points is the idea of taking control of your life. By that she suggests, you need to own it, embrace it and choose it. When you take responsibility for your life you become the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. WHat that means is, you decide who gets to be in Your movie. Isn't that fun and liberating? And you can decide "No more, I'm not letting other people choose for me."

If  you get stuck along the way one of the tools she recommends is conversational journaling. This strategy allows you to access your inner wisdom instead of seeking answers from outside yourself. To get started take out a piece of paper, find a quiet place to be with yourself without the distractions. Two important points to consider, the conversation is going to be between Me and Self. Don't overanalyze.
Your first line is Me: Dear Self, can I talk with you for a moment?
Next line: Self: I'm always here for you.
Me: I'm feeling stuck right now. I don't know what to do...

Catrice suggests that you continue the conversation to summon your own genius. As you move through this process the answers will come. She recommends starting your day off with it or using it any day or time when you feel stuck.

There's lots more goodies where that came from but I just had to share that with you.  Now Catrice's strategies and tools are second to none but hearing her speak is beyond amazing. Here's what one participant had to say after her presentation. "It is so phenomenal listening Catrice M. Jackson through her great knowledge and experience..."

Is It Your Time to Shine?

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach

Recently I tuned in to an interview with Kim Kiyosaki which got my attention. Kim said there was a recent article in The Economist which stated that the next big economic boom is not China, India or the Internet. Instead it’s Empowering Women because in times of economic crisis it’s the women who rise up and take action...

It led me to reflect on the recent changes to the self growth industry. In 2006, Rhonda Byrnes birthed The Secret and the personal development field was changed forever in terms of those bringing us the information.

Suddenly, almost overnight, we were exposed to leaders in the fields of personal growth and self development who reflected us… Here was Loral Langemeier, then a single mother AND business tycoon, and Lisa Nichols, a black woman who talked about how she overcame internalized racism.

Watching The Secret allowed us to ask ourselves some deep questions.

You see, the Secret was the beginning of a New Day, both in media, and more importantly on our planet! Women are coming into their power, and as we do, we lift our families, our communities, and our nations higher!

Think about it: if a society of mothers and grandmothers was running the planet, do you think we may have experienced more peace, prosperity and stability as a group these past few hundred years?

I think so!  Women are nurturers by nature. They build relationships and foster growth and development.

Can you see how women of all nations reclaiming their power is good for the planet?

I think so!

This is a new time for the planet, and it's a time for women to rise! So whether you are a woman, or you’ve always envisioned a society that allows women to be empowered, NOW IS YOUR TIME~

We've got an 11-Woman Empowerment panel covering 11 sessions on 11 different topics. That's 11 Life Changing Moments!

And we welcome men to get involved. In fact, as a man by participating in this event, you will be opening yourself to a positive future for all of the women in your life, and for yourself.

Now is your chance to advance. And if you join us ,you will look back on this day years later, and be thankful that you made this choice. To rise, stand in your power and to fully step into your greatness!

Register for The EMPOWERED WOMEN TELERETREAT today!http://mpowerurself.com/the-empowered-women-teleretreat-series It runs January 31 to February 9 2011!

Are you feeling run over by other people's demands?

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach
The only healthy communication style is assertive communication.- Jim Rohn

Do you have people in your life bossing you around, telling you what to do?
Have you had it up to your neck but you're afraid to speak up for your needs?

Many years ago I was afraid to say what was on my mind in my personal relationships because I felt I might lose my cool and blow my top. The reason is I habitually kept my anger bottled up for very long periods of time.

Where did that come from?  I grew up learning to be compliant so I wouldn't be punished. No matter how I was rebelling inside I didn't let it show. I was in fact demonstrating unhealthy patterns of communication, being mostly passive and sometimes aggressive.

When we choose to communicate in unhealthy ways we are prone to harbouring resentment, frustration and anger. We may even be carrying a lot of rage inside that we turn on ourselves. We may find ourselves depressed, avoiding social situations and experiencing poor relationships.

Thankfully there's a very effective way to communicate which will allow you to be heard ...

It's about expressing your feelings and thoughts in a way that is respectful.  It's called assertiveness and demonstrates high self-esteem and self-confidence.

The first tip is to recognize your assertive rights such as the right to be treated with respect and the right to express your feelings.

Next, stop and think about what's happening and how you want to Respond instead of react.

Third, create an I statement which reflects what feelings you want to express and what action you want from the other person. Example "I feel upset when you shout at me. In future I would like you to speak to me in a calm voice."

Fourth, practice what you want to say in front of a mirror or with an imaginary person before confronting the real situation.

Five, breathe, relax, stay calm and make eye contact while expressing yourself.

Warm Regards,
Lorna Blake

Are You Afraid of Change?

By Lorna Blake - Assertiveness Training Coach
Change is the one constant...

If you insist on clinging to who you are now, you'll miss the opportunity to meet the next greatest version of yourself.- Debbie Ford

Change is the one constant.  Yet many of us fight it for as long as we can. Until we're forced to change... Life is an adventure to be lived. It's about ongoing learning and discovery.

Wouldn't it be great to find out that you've got some skills, talents and abilities you never thought you had? Well, you can discover this by challenging yourself to try something new. Put yourself out there just a bit. Stretch yourself just a  wee bit.

Sometimes it's hard to do it by ourselves and  we put it off until a more convenient time but there's never going to be a convenient time. So it may be worth getting a coach or mentor.

As one of my favourite motivational speaker, Les Brown, says: "You can't see the picture when you're in the frame." A coach can help bring out the greatness within you. That's the main reason star athletes are such power performers.

No matter how good you are now, you may surprise yourself to find out how much more there is to you. You have greatness inside yourself.  You are magnificent and your next highest version of you is waiting to be given permission to show up and show out! Move over and give him or her a chance for a change!
